Frequently Asked Questions

Investing in a shepherd hut is an exciting project, whether it is a garden retreat for your home or a fleet of bespoke huts for a commercial glamping site.

We have gathered the most common questions we receive to help you plan your build. If you don’t see your question answered here, please get in touch with our Somerset workshop.

Planning & Site Preparation

Do I need planning permission for a shepherd hut?

In most cases, if the shepherd hut is placed within the curtilage (garden) of your main property and is used as an extension of the home (like a home office or spare room), you will not need planning permission because it is classified as a mobile, temporary structure. However, if you are using it for a commercial holiday let, placing it on agricultural land, or live in a designated area (like a National Park, AONB, or near a listed building), permission is usually required. We always recommend checking with your local planning authority before starting your project.

What kind of base do I need?

Because our huts are built on heavy-duty, engineered steel chassis, they require a firm, level base to ensure structural integrity and proper drainage. A solid concrete pad, compacted hardcore, or heavy paving slabs placed beneath the wheels are the most common solutions. We can advise on the exact groundworks required based on the size and weight of your specific hut.

Build Times & Customisation

How long does it take to build a shepherd hut?

Build times vary depending on our workshop schedule and the complexity of your project. As a general guide:

  • Self-Build Chassis & Shells: Typically 4 to 8 weeks.

  • Full-Kit Turnkey Builds: Typically 10 to 14 weeks.

  • Bespoke & Commercial Projects: Project timelines are agreed upon during the design phase. We will always give you a clear, realistic timeframe before you pay your deposit.

Can I customise the size and layout?

Absolutely. While we have popular standard dimensions, our Bespoke Projects service is designed for those who need something unique. We can create extra-wide huts, extra-long footprints, or even link multiple huts together to create multi-room layouts with separate bedrooms and en-suites.

Are your huts suitable for year-round use?

Yes. Our turnkey builds are crafted with premium insulation in the floor, walls, and roof, making them highly thermally efficient. Paired with our weatherproof exteriors and your choice of heating (such as a traditional wood-burning stove or modern electric radiators), your hut will remain warm and comfortable even in the depths of winter.

Delivery & Logistics

How is the hut delivered?

We deliver our huts using specialised flatbed trailers or Hiab lorries (lorries with an integrated crane), depending on your site access. Once unloaded, the hut is carefully rolled or craned into its final position.

What if my site has restricted access?

Good access is vital. We need to ensure a large vehicle can get close to the final site, checking for low branches, narrow gates, and tight turning circles. If access is particularly tricky, we can sometimes arrange for a crane to lift the hut over hedges or walls. We will discuss access with you in detail before confirming your order.

Self-Build & Safety

What exactly is included in a Self-Build Support package?

Our self-build option gives you the heavy-duty structural foundation. It includes our precision-engineered steel chassis (complete with wheels), the structural timber framing, and a fully finished weatherproof exterior (cladding and roofing). We leave the interior as a blank canvas for you to insulate, wire, plumb, and finish at your own pace.

Do your full-kit huts come with safety certificates?

Yes. All of our fully fitted, turnkey shepherd huts are delivered with a comprehensive 5-year gas and electric safety certification. We use fully qualified, registered professionals for all utility installations, giving you total peace of mind from day one.
